Flagging small Canadian miners hope for a boost from medical pot

VANCOUVER - Looking for ways to boost their flagging fortunes, a handful of tiny Canadian mining exploration companies are considering swapping their hard hats and shovels for bongs and baggies.

In the past couple of months, nearly a dozen of these so-called junior miners, hard hit by a downturn in the mining industry, have announced they might branch out into Canada's budding medical marijuana industry.

The announcements from Satori Resources Inc, which owns a moribund gold project in Manitoba, and Victory Ventures Inc, which has staked mineral claims in British Columbia, have propelled these rock-bottom penny stocks updward.

The buzz is being created by new Canadian rules that are due to take effect on April 1 that allow cannabis for medical use to be cultivated commercially by licensed growers. Until now, the medical marijuana industry has consisted mostly of small-scale home-grown operations.

Most of the miners' plans to enter the legal pot industry are at the investigative stage, leading to questions about whether they will actually make the move, or are just looking for a pop in share prices that have been pummeled by weak metal prices and a financing freeze.

Canada's junior mining industry has a history of seeking to ride the coattails of major investment fads, evident in the stampede from mining into technology during the 1990s tech boom and then back to mining once the bubble burst.

Those looking at the pot business "are generally juniors that have projects that are no longer viable," said Mickey Fulp, publisher of MercenaryGeologist.com, a junior resource industry newsletter.

"They all probably have good intentions, but the good intentions are to boost their stock prices and get something going outside of the exploration and mining sector," he said.

Health Canada estimates revenues from commercial pot could reach C$1.3 billion over the next 10 years and draw in an estimated 450,000 users of medical marijuana.

But some in the industry as well as risk-loving investors believe that is just the beginning, especially if marijuana is legalized for recreational use as is the case in two U.S. states.

"It has absolutely blue sky potential because no one really knows. At this stage, you want at least to have some exposure to it in case this is the next biggest thing," said James Nelson, a director of Terra Firma Resources Inc, a mining exploration company with graphite and precious metals properties in Canada, according to its website.

The shares of Supreme Pharmaceuticals Inc, which changed its name from Supreme Resources Ltd, have surged 700 percent this month, albeit to just 6 Canadian cents. The company's plans are more advanced than most, announcing this week that it is in talks to buy a producing medical marijuana business.

Satori Resources' shares have doubled to 9 Canadian cents in the past month, and Thelon Capital Ltd's is up nearly the same amount to 12 Canadian cents.

The risks of speculating were evident this week when the shares of several mining-to-pot companies plunged after a Canadian federal court judge issued an injunction against government plans to end the practice of grow-your-own medical marijuana on April 1. The ruling could reduce longer-term demand for commercial pot.

Competition is already fierce with several small biotech and pharmaceutical companies much further down the road with their medical cannabis plans.

"There is lot of stigma attached to junior resources shares," Jennifer Boyle, chief executive officer of Satori Resources, said in an interview.

"If we are getting into this space, then I want to make sure there is no real stigma attached and that what we may or may not do would be absolutely legitimate and a sound business."

03/14/2014 @ 4:00AM name change

03/24/2014 @ 3:01AM Supreme Acquires Option to Purchase Producing Medical Marijuana Facility

03/25/2014 @ 9:57AM is pleased to announce that the Company has signed a conditional agreement with an arms-length South Okanagan-based company, whereby the Company has the option to purchase its producing medical marijuana business until March 23, 2015 for the sum of $1,000,000, payable in cash and shares, subject to regulatory approval. The Company is currently in a 10-business day due diligence period and if satisfied, Supreme will, subject to prior approval of the TSXV, make a $100,000 option payment.

--

The medical marijuana industry in Canada is undergoing massive reform as a result of the new Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulation ("MMPR") regulation scheduled to come into effect April 1st, 2014, or some date thereafter-pending legal review. The vendor of the optioned medical marijuana business (the "Vendor") is currently producing marijuana under Medical Marijuana Access Program ("MMAP") licences and with Friday's court injunction to extend the MMAP program, will be able to continue to operate under its current licences past the April 1st, 2014 deadline until a trial can be held to argue this further, currently anticipated to be in 9 months. The Vendor will be applying for the new MMPR licence to produce and sell commercial medical marijuana, a process expected to take several months. Health Canada has currently issued a total of twelve commercial licences and has advised that it will be issuing additional licences. The Company's initial assessment is that the Vendor and its advisors meet the criteria set forth by the government due to its advanced business plan and key industry veterans involved. The Vendor is a past and current producer and has been in business since July of 2013 with 4 licenses for personal production. There is no assurance that such a license will be granted to the Vendor, which will be a key condition in the Company's decision as to whether to exercise the option or not.

British Columbia is known for its high quality marijuana production. Health Canada has reported that British Columbia produces 69.4% of the medical marijuana plants authorized for production within the country. British Columbia is prolific for both its agriculture and horticulture. The climate for growing marijuana in the Okanagan is arguably the best in the world. Analysts and industry experts estimate that this new commercial scale medical marijuana industry could reach $2.6 billion by 2016.

President and CEO Mr. David Stadnyk states, "We are excited to be able to enter into an agreement to purchase a business that is established and has a realistic chance of acquiring a major MMPR commercial license from Health Canada. We are continuing to evaluate additional opportunities in both Canada and the United States, which will give our shareholders upside potential. We believe this industry is in its infancy and we are excited to be able to get into the business in the industry's early days. We think that this life science field complements the pharmaceutical and bio-medical devices that we are currently reviewing, and that 2014 will be a satisfying one for our shareholders."

The Company also announces that it is undertaking a non-brokered private placement of up to $500,000 by the issuance of units at $0.075, with each unit consisting of one common share and one warrant entitling the holder to purchase one additional share for 2 years at $0.10. The Company will pay commissions to those arms length finders assisting in the private placement of 8% cash, and 8% in finder's warrants to purchase shares at $0.075 for 2 years. Proceeds will be used for general working capital.

Heath Canada states, “The Marijuana Medical Access Program (MMAP) ends on March 31, 2014. This is also the date that all Authorizations to Possess, Personal-Use Production Licenses and Designated-Person Production Licenses expire. As of April 1, 2014, the only legal access to marijuana for medical purposes will be through licensed producers under the Marijuana for Medical Purposes Regulations (MMPR), even if you have an authorization to possess or a license to produce that has a later date.

Upcoming changes in medical marijuana licencing will allow for licensed producers to grow on a larger, commercial scale. In estimates from Health Canada the industry could be worth $1.3 billion by 2024, but analysts and industry experts speculate that this newly formed commercial scale medical marijuana business could reach $2.6 Billion by 2016. The United States is also undergoing medical marijuana reform with 20 states now recognizing legal medical marijuana.  In addition Colorado and Washington State have legalized recreational use with additional states contemplating legalization.

President and CEO Mr. David Stadnyk states, "As a diversified life science company we are now looking into the medical marijuana industry as part of our duty to our shareholders to investigate potential transactions. As a company we continue to search for opportunities that provide value and the medical marijuana industry appears to be booming and may offer significant rewards to our shareholders. We have several key contacts with potentially valuable opportunities and we will evaluate them rigorously.”

Legalization of medical marijuana is on the agenda of at least half a dozen nations on three continents. A conference of Caribbean nations debates the merits of allowing medical use of cannabis. A cancer-stricken South African lawmaker makes an emotional plea for legalization. Parents of Israeli children suffering from debilitating epileptic seizures win the right to medicate with cannabis. All this and more in the world of medical marijuana…

MEXICO
Left-wing senators have introduced legislation that would legalize medical marijuana in Latin America’s second most populous nation. The Senate bill would establish a legal framework for medical marijuana production, transport and distribution.

Congressman Fernando Belaunzaran of the progressive Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) is promoting legalization as a means of combating cartel violence that has claimed tens of thousands of lives in a brutal and ongoing drug war.

“Seventy thousand dead, 26,000 disappeared and an incalculable number of internally displaced are more than sufficient reason to look for an alternative model,” asserted Belaunzaran.

On a recent visit to Mexico, Tibetan Buddhist leader the Dalai Lama criticized recreational marijuana use but said that the plant has pharmaceutical advantages and endorsed medical use as the “only exception” to continued prohibition.

BAHAMAS
Citing recent developments in the United States, Foreign Affairs Minister Fred Mitchell confirmed that the archipelago nation’s government would consider legalization of medical marijuana at the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) summit held recently in March in Kingstown, St. Vincent and Grenadines.

Meanwhile, ST. VINCENT AND GRENADINES Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves said he hoped that CARICOM leaders would take “more than baby steps” toward decriminalizing marijuana for medical purposes when the matter was debated at the summit beginning March 12. Gonsalves called medical marijuana “an idea the time of which has come.”

“I am not talking about legalizing marijuana,” said Gonsalves. “The discussion is about decriminalization in respect of medical marijuana, and very small quantities regarding use for social and religious purposes, but not to be made available for anyone under the age of 18.”

JAMAICA
The Cannabis Commercial and Medicinal Research Task Force (CCMRT) said it had received government assurances that cannabis would be decriminalized by the end of the year in Jamaica, as the island nation forges ahead with plans to establish a medical marijuana industry.

SOUTH AFRICA
Cancer-stricken Member of Parliament Mario Oriani-Ambrosini has introduced a bill that would make South Africa the first nation on the continent to legalize medical marijuana. In an emotional address to fellow lawmakers, Oriani-Ambrosini admitted to using cannabis to manage the chronic pain of his late-stage lung cancer and appealed to Parliament to help patients with terminal conditions such as his by approving his Medical Innovation Bill.

NEW ZEALAND
The New Zealand Drug Foundation, a nongovernmental organization dedicated to preventing and reducing social, health and economic harms caused by drugs and alcohol in the South Pacific island nation, urged “compassion” for patients using medical marijuana until they are able to do so legally.

“We support the medical use of cannabis,” NZDF Executive Director Ross Bell said, adding that legalizing recreational marijuana use was quite another debate. The nation’s health ministry does not support medical cannabis use, although a NZ$1,200-a-month spray containing marijuana extract is available and used by four patients.

THE PHILIPPINES
Philippine lawmaker Rodolfo Albano III introduced a bill that would legalize medical marijuana in the archipelago nation of 97 million residents. Albano cited Dr. Sanjay Gupta, an American doctor and journalist for CNN, who recently said that “for some patients, medical marijuana is the only thing that works.” While Filipino Health Secretary Enrique Ona recently said that his office is neither for nor against medical marijuana, several of the nation’s lawmakers, including the House minority bloc, have argued in favor of medicinal marijuana legalization.

“We are in agreement that marijuana for medicinal, strictly medicinal, purposes should be examined and legitimized. For recreational purposes, that’s an entirely different issue,” said House Minority Leader Ronaldo Zamora.

ISRAEL
Children suffering from severe chronic epileptic seizures and who have not responded to pharmaceutical medications will now be eligible for medical marijuana, the Israeli Health Ministry recently announced. Parents of epileptic children had launched a campaign threatening to move to Colorado, where many medical marijuana “refugees” have flocked to receive treatment for their ailing children.

“My daughter has seven–eight seizures a day and the doctors have nothing to do,” pleaded one mother. “I’m not asking, I’m begging — give me the license to use medical cannabis. With this amount of seizures, what is the Health Ministry waiting for? … Why are they letting us suffer this way?”

The Health Ministry has also added fibromyalgia to the list of ailments legally treatable with medical marijuana. Other eligible illnesses include cancer, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Tourette’s syndrome and chronic pain.

SPAIN
A group of researchers from the University of Alicante published a study in the peer-reviewed scientific journalExperimental Eye Research suggesting that cannabinoids could help slow vision loss caused by retinitis pigmentosa, an inherited, degenerative eye disease that can lead to blindness. Using rats, the researchers were able to slow vision loss by administering synthetic tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Rats given daily doses of the drug showed significantly better vision than control rats, and the THC-treated rats also showed 40 percent more photoreceptors, critical in vision, than the control group.

Ex-Microsoft-Manager wird Cannabis-Händler  2. April 2014, 14:36

  • GELD:Bank Austria - Partner in allen Geldfragen

(APA/red, derStandard.at, 2.4.2014)
