(RTTNews) - Chinese out-of-home digital television advertising network provider VisionChina Media, Inc. (VISN: News ) reported Tuesday a 62% year-over-year drop in profit for the fourth quarter, reflecting higher expenses as well as quarterly revenue decline. Earnings per share for the quarter dropped, but came in line with analysts' expectations. Going forward, the company also provided revenue forecast for the first quarter of fiscal 2010, significantly below consensus estimate.
In a statement, chairman and chief executive officer, Limin Li said,"Although the challenges faced by our industry throughout a difficult 2009 extended into the fourth quarter, we were pleased to end the year above our own expectations. Our most significant and important corporate development in 2009 was our decision to acquire Digital Media Group, which closed in the beginning of 2010."
The Shenzhen, China-based company reported net income of US$5.63 million or US$0.08 per share for the fourth quarter, down about 61% from US$14.82 million or US$0.20 per share in the prior-year quarter.
On average, three analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report earnings of $0.08 per share for the fourth quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
Excluding items, non-GAAP net income for the quarter dropped to US$7.21 million from US$16.0 million in the year-ago quarter.
Total revenues for the quarter declined to US$31.83 million from US$34.25 million in the same quarter last year, and missed four Wall Street analysts' consensus estimate of $32.38 million.
Operating profit for the fourth quarter dropped to $6.29 million from $12.80 million in the prior-year quarter, while total operating expenses were $8.43 million, up from $6.85 million in the year-ago quarter.
Gross profit for the quarter declined to $14.52 million from $19.66 million in the same quarter last year.
For fiscal 2009, the company reported net income of US$26.60 million or US$0.37 per share, up from US$46.81 million or US$0.65 per share in the prior year. Analysts expected the company to report earnings of $0.37 per share for fiscal 2009.
Excluding items, non-GAAP net income for the year dropped to US$33.70 million from US$49.94 million in the year ago.
Total revenues for the full year rose 16% to US$120.69 million from US$104.08 million posted in fiscal 2008. The Street was looking for full-year 2009 revenues of $121.55 million.
"Looking forward, we are encouraged by recent new customer wins that demonstrate the industry's increasing recognition of the value of our unique breadth of services. In the near-term, however, we expect a number of factors will negatively impact our revenue including industry competition, restructuring our sales force and integrating our acquisition of Digital Media Group. As a result of these factors, we anticipate that sales visibility for the first quarter of 2010 will be limited," chief financial officer, Scott Chen added.
