STOCKHOLM (Dow Jones)--Mobile phone maker Sony Ericsson Wednesday said pretax profit almost tripled in the third quarter as several hit products helped the company capture market share. The figures confirmed a Dow Jones Newswires report earlier Wednesday.
Pretax profit rose to EUR433 million from EUR151 million in the three months
ended Sept. 30. Revenues rose to EUR2.91 billion from EUR2.06 billion in the
quarter, said Sony Ericsson, a joint venture between Telefon AB LM Ericsson
(ERIC) and Sony Corp. (SNE).
Net profit rose to EUR298 million from EUR104 million.
Analysts polled by SME Direkt had expected pretax profit of EUR209 million and revenues of EUR2.38 billion.
"The third quarter saw Sony Ericsson reap the success of hit products
announced earlier in the year such as the high-end K800 and W810," said Sony Ericsson's Chief Executive Miles Flint in a statement.
Sony Ericsson shipped 19.8 million phones in the quarter, up 43% from the 13.8 million in the third quarter of 2005.
Sony Ericsson said it has gained around one percentage point market share to 8% as a result of the strong sales.
